Down East Loop

Note: Pictures have been added to the end of our last page, Homeward Bound. Check them out before you read this new page.

Plans are coming together to leave on our next adventure on May 27 to do the "Down East Loop". This trip is about 4,000 miles and takes about 5 months, essentially half the trip we just finished. The loop part of this trip starts and ends in New York City. We again go up the Hudson River, but this time go straight north to Lake Champlain and then up the Richelieu River to the St. Lawrence River. We're going to take a little side trip up river to Montreal, then up the Ottawa River to Ottawa, and then south down the Rideau Canal to Kingston, and then down the St. Lawrence River to the Maritime Provinces, around the tip of Nova Scotia, through Bras d' Or Lake, around the south tip of Nova Scotia, accross the Bay of Fundy, down the Maine coast, through the Cape Code Canal, back to New York, and then south back to Beaufort. We plan to be in New York City on our way north about June 13, Ottawa on about June 29, Kingston about July 6, Prince Edward Island about August 11, Halifax about September 5, New York City again about October 5, and back home by the end of October.

As I write this page, it is March 10. We're working on the boat to improve a few things. The old Detroits leak around the exhaust manifolds, most old Detroits do, but I'm replacing the manifold gaskets in hopes that I can stop that leaking. Then we're going to add some Plexiglas doors on either side of the back sun deck to improve that enclosure in rough weather. Then just forward of those doors we're going to cut in deck drains to try to keep water from coming back onto the sun deck floor. She'll be better then new at handling rough weather.

We'll start posting again as we head out. This looks like another exciting trip, an ODYSSEE for sure!

As we face another W.I.M. and another snow storm, we are envying your lifestyle. It's nice to know that some get to "live the dream". I was checking over my "Favorites" and clicked on ODYSSEE to see what you're doin' and it likes like you're doin' just fine. We are having lunch with Bruce Albertson and the Dahlmans and I printed out the ODYSSEE to take it along. Sure you wouldn't like to join us for W.I.M. next weekend???

ENJOY!!

We hadn't checked your blog site for awhile, but happened to look at it tonight. Your trip sounds exciting. When did Al & Marilyn head north to Canada? We're picking up Mary Wenkstern this weekend and heading over to visit the Tom Porters in Vero Beach. We'll stop by see Ron's classmate, Bob Erickson and his wife on our way home on Monday. We leave for Czech Republic on May 1st, returning on May 14th. We're looking forward to it. We'll keep track of your travels on your blog site. Have a wonderful & safe trip. Ron & Jaci Willow

ODYSSEE,
My, these password-controlled programs and such are rewarding.
I came across this site while seeking info about the Cat 3116.
Found your experience with the engine tranplant, both the cause and the remedy, interesting. I suppose a major boat part replacement is better than a major body part replacement.
We enjoyed sharing the Burritts Rapids wall with ODYSSEE and OUR VILLA July 1. Surprised HATTIE and LORD NELSON didnt get up to some hanky-spanky while all slept that night.
We wish to know what ODYSSEE did about refueling at Merrickville, at Aylings. The river current was very strong in early June, and the fuel dock area was somewhat cramped for a 43 foot boat. When we passed in mid-July the current was diminished during canal operating hours, but increased over night. How you dealt with the challenge has been a question on our minds since the summer.
We reached Ottawa July 5 for a four day visit, then retraced our route homeward to tie in Penetanguishene at 1:00 pm August 26, ending a marvellous trip of 84 days.
We wish you calm anchorages for all your future cruises, whether they be afloat or ashore!
